"Daughters of the Dust" tells the story of a family of African-Americans who have lived for many years on a Southern offshore island, and of how they come together one day in 1902 to celebrate their ancestors before some of them leave for the North. The film is narrated by an unborn child, and ancestors already dead also seem to be as present as the living.。国公府嫡女柳如念因父兄战死，被将军战易寒收为义妹，却被战易寒未婚妻纪轻轻嫉妒，设计陷害柳如念。主母李慈指责柳如念败坏纲常，战易寒将她送入军营两年。柳如念在营中沦为军妓，受尽折辱。战易寒以为她不肯悔改，也对她不闻不问。
